Raising Prices
I wanted to share my learning experience in pricing our hand-made, locally made goods. The Lightning Vest was our first product and the original price of $80 was based on the assumption that all sales would be made directly to customers via our online shop. I wanted to avoid the retail mark-up and pass the savings to the customer. It was underpriced- but I figured that was the sacrifice for getting your product out there. I wanted to take wholesale orders and raised the price to $95 but this was still too low. Creating one vest is a meticulous, time-consuming process and I am forced to adjust my prices accordingly.
Lightning Vests are $138 now. Here is a glimpse into what goes into the production cycle:
The material is custom-made from the best quality 3M reflective materials and is slit to my requested width. Once received, each strand has to be cut to the correct length, draped on a dress form and hand-knotted (over 100 knots for each vest). This labor takes 1- 2 hours depending on one’s experience. A numbered label is stamped, heat-set and sewed on. It is then packaged in it’s own pouch that is made in the USA; stamped and heat set as well. This all takes place in our Brooklyn, New York studio.
I hope you understand the value behind our unique designs and materials, as well as hand-made, U.S. labor.
